Flooring. One of the most abused materials in a home. So, which flooring do you choose?

Well… To each is their own. With all of the various materials for flooring, everyone has their own thoughts on where carpet or tile should be in the home. Here is my take on some of the main flooring options with some backing information to further break down the thought process.

Personally, Tile is a great choice for any room. Tile flooring has come such a long way in design since the standard square 10” x 10” in basic colors. You can jazz up any space with the new varieties in today's market.

High Traffic Areas:

These areas will be your entryways and hallways. Any entrance into your home should be a water resistant material. People & pets walking in and out constantly, not to mention the rainy and or snowy days that get tracked in. Some vinyl flooring says they are water resistant, but if the edges aren't sealed properly, you will start to notice bubbling or lifting. Tile has the durability to withstand the attention of those high traffic areas being waterproof and strong.

Carpet Areas:

Bedrooms. Carpet gives a warm and nice feel when you wake up in the morning and put your feet down. However, if you have pets, think again about having carpet at all. Carpet is such a catch all from dirt, dust and bacteria to the accidental spills of drinks, food and even your pets waste.

Hardwoods:

Hardwoods are beautiful! But a tricky flooring to have anywhere. They are fragile! They can chip and dent very easily not to mention, water is not its friend... Think of your lifestyle, your family, and where you would want the real woods to be in your home. It is easy to have the floors refinished every few years, however, that is a very costly expense to take on. In today's market, tile materials now look like real wood and will withstand the abuse a true wood floor should never take.

Concrete:

The option that saves you a ton of money - go with polished concrete. Its very cost effective as most of the time, your floors will already be poured. You can apply a layer of finish to the top to seal it and then add a decorative runner or area rug to soften the space. Some layers of finish can also be tinted to give your floors a different color than the light grey that concrete is.

Lastly, in any instance, an area rug is a great flooring option that you can wash or even change out when you get tired of looking at its color or design.
